This book was very useful to start using mental ray for 3D interior and exterior lighting, and some input on the Mental Ray materials. I went through the tutorials and can begin to understand the process. Although the book contains a previous version of 3ds Max (I use 3ds Max 2009 Design) most dialog boxes can be related to the new version. When the tutorials directly to the creation of bulbs, there are some notable differences between the old version of 3ds used in the book, and the new 2009 version of 3ds Max. The book does an excellent job of explaining why the various settings available in mental ray. Many dialogs useful to illustrate each process tutorials. I keep this book as a reference for lighting mental ray architectural renderings I work. I hope a version update will also include mental ray systems and their natural lighting and use their analysis to Leeds or Green Globes projects. Highly recommended.

This book is intended for users max intermediate to advanced, but this material is far from that. MR is a powerful rendering engine, and the book does not cover the lighting with lights photometric section HDR is bad, bad, terrible. If you have basic knowledge of Max and MR, then you can go to the shop Autodesk and form video that are of better quality. I own about 5 training videos from Autodesk that are mostly lectures by well known artists such as Gary M. Davis, and even if they are short, about 90 minutesA room, they explain some things that books do not cover. In my opinion, if you buy the book Rendering with mental ray and 3ds Max by Joep van der Steen, you'll have a richer information on the works of how mental ray (it also includes some tutorials inside and outside), so you could then simply ask your architectural projects.

At first I was reluctant to buy this book Previous books about mental ray is not as useful as a user of 3ds max. I must confess that I was totally surprised to discover that this book explores most areas of use of mental ray. In addition, I was delighted to have seen for the first time a book that addresses the subject on the errors of mental ray and how to overcome them. The effect "flash light" tutorial was another surprise for me especially as this technique has always been linked to Maxwell renderer. Working with Jamie Cardoso known for years, I knew this book would be a good buy. All tutorials are innovative and easy to follow. Finally, the range of detailed 3D scenes, bitmaps and documentation make this book a very good value for money indeed. A big thank you to Jamie and Roger. . . . Are you planning the second edition soon? This book left me wanting more.
