What a waste of money this book is. Thank God I had the good sense to not purchase this hunk of dung. I find it funny that the only reviews of this book are from a handful of his brown nosing students and a couple disgruntled ones. Why would anyone buy this book if they weren’t required to for the class being taught by Ross? Horribly structured, confusing and redundant. Ross makes Max boring and impossible. The writer’s own knowledge is so limited that I can’t fathom how he wrote “a book.” All I can say is don’t buy this, because you’d be better off in the forums. But, if you must buy a book buy anything but this.

There are some gems in this book. For example, I liked how the author demonstrates how to use the shell modifier in 3dMax 6. This is a new feature and the tutorial attempts to demonstrate its use. Only problem is that the turorial is not easy to follow as many are not. The author fails to include examples of the different stages of modeling. You get the begining 3d model on cd and the final version (in some cases). However, it would be nice to show a model in different steps of completion. Overall, many tutorials suffer because of this. The still life tutorial was a dissapointment. 3d max comes with a better tutorial that is more realistic and impressive. The best tutorial is the character animation tutorial. However, this character looks weird. The worst character I have ever seen. Not the best book on 3d max with black and white diagrams, poorly sequenced tutorials and instruction that leaves much to be desired.

This is a great all around Max guide, and has the best tutorials I’ve read. They’re easy to understand, while being thorough. It’s perfect for learning the basics and has a lot of tips and tricks as well. Overall it’s very straightforward and well organized to help you find exactly what you’re looking for.

This book is a great way to get yourself started with 3d studio max 6. It is structured to teach you how to model and animate rather than just discussing the different functions of the program. The tutorials provided are very well written and stand out from other books on the subject because they explain not only what steps to take but also the reason behind each of the steps. 3d Studio Max is a very complicated piece of software but Aaron Ross has clearly mastered it. He tries to point out potential pitfalls so that you may avoid them before they occur.

After trying to muddle through a few tutorials from other 3d modeling books, I really appreciate how well the tutorials of this book are written. In many of the tutorials, Aaron Ross will point out what will go wrong as you are working throught the tutorial and how to fix it! Although, I agree that the character model is not pretty, this does not detract from the tutorial itself. This book does provide an excellent foundation for using 3ds Max 6 and I recommend it for any beginner.
