    Bender
    Final Render
    ZBrush
    Maxwel Render
    Photoshop

I recommend trying the demos first. You may also be able to find a free version of some of these programs.

I know that Poser Pro supports the Collada file format and you could get a free plug-in to import Collada in 3DS Max. Collada is a non-proprietary file standard supported by many software companies in the 3D business. Unfortunately, Autodesk, makers of 3DS Max and Maya, prefer promoting their own format, FBX, and are trying to kill Collada. Luckily, there are plug-ins for 3DS Max and Maya to import Collada.

So this is one route for you.

But if you plan to use 3DS Max, I strongly suggest that you consider Softimage XSI instead. I’ve used 3DS Max, Maya and XSI. I find Max outdated and Maya’s workflow too cumbersome. XSI has a huge amount of features out of the box and the workflow is great. It also comes with hours of training videos in the box. Also, learning XSI is probably the best investment as Softimage has definitely showed that they are doing the most innovation in their software lately. BTW, XSI supports Collada out of the box, i.e. without the need of any plug-ins.

When you get XSI, you have a 30 day trial license so you get a taste of it.

    Hope this helps!
